I'm not nessacarily shy, per se. "Asynchronous introversion" might be the best description.

I'd just rather not saddle the person with a litany of my personal issues, real and imagined.

Exactly. My issues are mine to deal with, and I get along just fine keeping them to myself.
It's probably not a very good way to deal in the long run though.
