What I like to do is take a hot shower and let the heat open up my pores so I can clean them, then at the end I make it really cold and just put my face in the water before shutting it off. It shrinks the pores back down more quickly to close a window of opportunity for gunk to get back in while the pores are expanded.

That's exactly what I do as well. The fact that your skin is warm thanks to the hot water makes you barely feel the cold, also you're not cold when you get out of the shower. Plus, apparently it helps with acne because you open up your pores, they get nice and clean, then you close them so that no bacteria can get in and make a mess.
