Your chances of success with this are so much higher, and the typical paperback novel is about the same price as 1.5 to 2 drinks. It is definitely worth the investment. You can even set up future dates by suggesting she meet with you to discuss the book.
It's not about equality. It's about doing that person a favor bc they seem cool and you are attracted to them, or you want to be friends with them. It's called "being nice", but you wouldn't know much about that.

How much money have you spent on strangers this year?

Most Barnes and Noble stores have a cafe, perfect for a safe neutral ground meetup.
If that's what you're going for, an encyclopedia would suffice, provided you put in enough force. I would not recommend, however. Blunt-force trauma makes for bad long-term relationships.
Bookstore pubs. With open mikes.
But why is buying drinks for girls considered a social norm? I was wondering that.
