Japan isn't generally in charge of English translation.
The Japanese name is Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance. Seirei means "spirit", and tsukai means "use", so it just means "spirit user", so "elementalist" would have worked just fine. Elemantaler doesn't even exist in English. (Though it does appear to exist in Japanese to some extent.)
