It is rumored that covering to front with your hand will stop the shell from firing. Then again I never tried so who knows

That is true for a missile launcher. Not so much an artillery piece.

Correct, it's essentially just a big gun. Your finger isn't going to stop a bullet from a gun and what's left of you after trying to stop one of those rounds with your hand isn't going be pretty.
