Please...I am pretty sure it's a greater loss that the dude died!! Yes, its tragic for those left behind, but come on, he died! Get a grip!

I thought the picture was saying that the cost of war was that a father/husband/everyday person with a life and family lost his life needlessly.

Have you heard of the old (I think Victorian) trend called post-Mortem portraits? Families would get their photos taken with the body of their dead loved ones. Or their clothes. This is saying that the cost of war is lost loved ones.
