They'd have to be waterproof too and last for several hours

why they dont build little station between paths with lamps (water proof) on them..really bright ones.. and build like this path for path bright.. then map it from point to point..everytime just a little bit more..map the area while the trips etc.. voila.. a map of the basic cave system (if you not map every corner down there).. then you can go to this points you already visit and map new areas every time..would work..but cost much.
I almost went there last summer, but it isn't open to the public. You have to call months in advance to make reservations and you can only spend about 2 or 3 hours there.and they only have a few days out of the week you can go, it's pretty exclusive.
U telling me nobody has had the idea of just tying a piece of string to something on the surface and holding the string ball as they descend?

i think if you use a string, you will have a bad time. the string will easy rip apart if it rub against the sharp walls (it's stone + sharp).. so if you would do this, i think it would not help you long enough to come back, mostly because if you get in panic and try to get back, you will make lots of movements on the string..this will rub it on the stone walls and then rip apart. you would need something like a cable made of steel or metall or something that is flexible but doesn't rip apart.. and i think thats hard to find for this case (because thin cables would rip too because of the cold down there + stone etc.).. i don't know if just this would work.. you would need more something like handles you slam into the stone walls where you can swim along while you hold it.. like in pools when you have handles to climb out of the pool..i think this would be a beter idea. mostly because you can then add to this handles light's who are waterproof and have light down there etc..hmmm...
8 pp die because of bad planning
that's all
