I have a few friends in the military and they've told me that they are literally not allowed poke fun at the president or express their political opinions
Hmm. I find that hard to believe. Even when I was in basic, my RTCs expressed all of that, and they were discussed quite frequently at the office as well. Former President Bush was the center of many jokes in the office. Soooo.
I believe you sign away your freedom of speech and all that jazz in the first amendment when you join the Army. I was looking into it a couple of days ago
Pretty much. An old saying in the Army was "We defend democracy, not practice it."
Now, if during a discussion you are able to frame your opinions intelligently through point, counterpoint discourse, that's actually fine most of the time.
However, in recent times, who has held the office has been contentious, even among members of the military. I once new of a senior NonCom nearly have treason charges filed against him for running his mouth with, "he's not my president," statements.
Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice: "Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct." This is not limited to verbal words. Article 89 is Disrespect towards Superior Commissioned Officers. This makes sense, in a business you can get in trouble because you upset people or piss off customers, in the military your insubordination/contempt can cost lives.
A commissioned officer is someone who is generally an O-3 or above, as entry-levels. They are held to a higher standard. You can also voice your opinion on a situation without speaking ill about someone.
Trump didn't start a war. Using chemical weapons is illegal, and using it on your own civilians is an affront to humanity. America, being seen as the world police, couldn't let that go without doing anything. I can guarantee that Russia isn't going to start World War III because some Syrian air base was blown up.
While you are correct with chemical weapons being illegal and such... we really should look back on the past on getting involved in civil wars of other countries. We also should also not try to be the protective uncle of the world. One day that is gonna bite us in the ass.
It already is biting us in the ass. Unfortunately for Americans, we get judged for intervening, but yet criticized when we choose to stay neutral - though I rarely see other countries making an effort to help. Personally I am of the opinion that the U.S. should not get involved in other countries' affairs unless it directly affects us, especially in the state we are in right now.
The only issue is that we are the free world and what separates us from the rest of the countries that are free is the fact that we fight to make the world more free and to protect the people who cannot defend themselves. How many people will we simply watch get murdered because it does not directly affect us. The same argument goes for the war with Saddam Hussein I do not believe that we though he had WMD's but he was a maniac who was killing millions of his own people with chemical weapons. Will we simply watch him kill millions of innocence to preserve our own military personal? We are the strongest country out of all the free world and if we do not protect these people no one will. Our ancestors fought hard for freedom so that they could pass it down to the future children and immigrants of the United States. I personally believe that we were blessed with a gift and we should attempt to give it to everybody.
@ raven - The entitlement bonus can be up to about $40,000 depending on your skills and what you are committing to in the US Army. It's why you'll see so many expensive cars on the training bases, because fresh out of high school, now legal adults, see their money want to show off with something flashy and buy them. Around almost (likely every) every base you'll see a wealth of strip clubs, tattoo parlors, and car dealerships because of the poor financial management of the newly enlisted.
