All of my bees died this year =[
We even had a hive that was partially in the house and had been there for years.
Something is seriously wrong with the bees
It is more than just GMO's. My bees are in an area where GMO's aren't allowed and they get tested. There are diseases that have gotten out of hand that affect bees really bad, that's how I lost several of my hives.
Today, seeds are engineered with neonics from the start, so this harmful chemical is present in the plant, pollen and nectar. Some 6,000 times more toxic to bees than DDT, neonics devastate bee central nervous systems and makes it impossible for them to relocate their hives. The disease comes from the fact that they've been poisoned
Some botanists have said that because terrain varies so much across the US you shouldn't plant the seeds. Species good in one place are dangerously invasive and even illegal in others. Your best bet is to go to Home Depot or Lowes or the supermarket and check out the seeds on their racks, they'll sell wildflowers safe for your particular area.
Good point. I have flowers planted already from my local garden shop, just hadn't planted these yet. We're also "those" people who let the dandelions run free for a month longer than most people since they're bee's first food source. (Also have cherry trees, magnolia, lilac bushes, and an apple tree.)
So I read an article from someone saying this could potentially be bad, but there was no specifics in the article, didn't mention flower types or regions or anything. I know that they did use a company (Veseys Seeds) thats a certified organic company. Does anyone know of any links that shows specifics? I looked up the plants that are in the free packets and none of them are listed as invasive by the US Dept of Agriculture.
This one may help. http://amp.usatoday.com/story/99416524/
It lists some regions and also mentions that Cheerios tried to ensure that the correct seeds were sent to the correct region.
Yup! They're trying to raise awareness. Don't plant the seeds though, unless you make sure all the species included are safe for your area and there's nothing that will cause problems.
So the bees are dying but the murderous Africanized bees in front of my house would not die? Wtf we finally killed them and sealed their hive in Bc they're so dangerous
So the Africanized gene is a recessive gene that causes anxiety and aggression. Best way to get rid of them without causing harm to the ecosystem is to breed bees that aren't Africanized to interbred with them and take out the gene.
We called the beekeepers to come get them but they said they couldn't take them Bc they were a danger to the beekeepers... we aren't beekeepes ourselves. They just kinda set up camp in the tree in front of our house and there wasn't much we could do. I wish we could have saved them but my parents wouldn't have wanted to try to bring more bees onto our property just to fix the ones we already had problems with
Ya unfortunately it can be a bit of a process and takes a lot of land and come resources to 'convert' an africanized colony. Its not easy to do, you either can do it slowly over a period of 1-2 years or over a week. I had done it once over a week and it was pretty intense.

Address the real problem first.. you can plant all the flowers you want it's not gonna help.
