A cry for help in time of need, await relief from holy league. 60 days of siege, outnumbered and weak. Sent a message to the sky, wounded soldiers left to die. Will they hold the wall or will the city fall?

They were probably good enough fighters that they were able to make up for have an impediment like wings on their backs.

Being mounted soldiers probably also helped. Cavalry tended to have an edge over the usual schmuck who was stuck plodding on the ground.

Well they had horn hats for ceremonial purposes. The reason they were depicted as having horns was because those who drew or painted them added horns for satan imagery.
