I get that the "what [race] are you?" question is rather rude, but people also seem to take offense to "where are you from?" I feel like the latter isn't racist though; I for one, just want to know where you're from out of curiosity and because I like learning about different cultures. Can someone explain why asking where someone is from is rude?
I ask this question of many people, because I make it a sort of game with myself to guess. I am particularly good at guessing eastern and northern europe.
I'd say it's rude to ask someone you don't or barely know. If they're a friend, it's probably come up already.
Yes, we are all human, but we do have differences. If it is something you are genuinely curious about, I *think* you might be able to politely ask what their cultural heritage is.
