I mean better to cut it off when it's that bad and doctors don't know what's wrong than to risk it getting so bad you'd have had to cut off your whole foot or when your whole leg.

I mean my great great grandma had gangrene in her thumb so her husband got her drunk and they just chopped it off. I know that's not the 80s but it's still a fun story.

Actually getting a doctor to amputate something is extremely difficult, even if it's very bad they often fool around trying to 'treat' something that is best destroyed and done with. I had a skin growth on my neck that caused me a lot of pain because it was right at the collar line nobody would remove the thing because it was 'benign' so I tied it off with some filament and cut it off with a box cutter, problem solved.
