The REAL use of a magikarp

I have a sad, sad confession to make.
When I was young and uncultured, I use up my Master Ball to catch a Gyarados. He wasn't even shiny or high levelled. I just did it. And to this day, I am ashamed.

I like how the one gets caught, but then there are two in the last panel.

And to point it out, it was stated in the Pokémon anime that magicarp is mostly bone and thus can't easily be eaten.

Magikarp may be useless, but it can swim in water that's very polluted. Also, it evolves into a relatively strong Pokemon, gyrados

Magikarp evolves into Gyarados, one of the most badass Pokémon in the games. Eating one is a waste of its awesome potential.

Magikarp is almost all scales. In the anime, Meowth tried to eat the one James purchased. Wasn't even good for food so James kicked it into the ocean and it evolved.
