It isn't true. There have been studies and it seems to be completely false. In a study of 47 patients needing a heart transplant, 79% of them reported no change in personality or habits, 15% felt a change due to their life threatening event but nothing major, and the final 6% (Three patients) say it changed their personality. The low number along with the fact that it is likely to be a simple misassociation of the true cause cause it to be debunked.

There's bit of controversy over that. The memory study is currently being used as proof that some amount of brain cells must still exist, but apparently no one's actually identified those cells.
