Quite a few people who are destroying it are doing so in the name of their god, so we can just take down two birds with one stone.

To use an example.... Isis believes the west is destroying the world with corruption and imperialism, and the attacks against them that often hurt civilians- so they fight the west. The west believes Isis is destroying the world through the spreading of their ideas and values, through fear, and through their attacks which largely hurt civilians- so they fight Isis. So In comes the third party who says religion is the cause of all this destruction and fighting- so they fight Isis and the west? So what happens when the fourth person comes in and is upset that everyone can't let everyone else be? Do they fight Isis, the west, and the third person? Does adding more people to the fight somehow make the world safer? What if one side wins over the others through brutal and decisive or protracted victory, so the losers decedents then carry on a grudge fight for decades or millennia? That's a pretty big part of how so many of these "religious" conflicts have continued to present day.
