I think both are true by degrees. The measure character isn't how much we give a person when we have more than enough for ourselves, it's in how much we give those with greater need when we don't have enough to give. It's good to protect yourself from being used or taken advantage of, but if someone isn't good enough a person to help you when you need it, the choice is up to you if you want to be at their level or do better. If a man would watch you die and do nothing, are we justified to watch him die without raising a hand? I wouldn't trade my moms life for his, but I would do for him what he wouldn't for me. Not because I owe him, but because I want to be the best person I can be.
Do it at least once so that they may see the lengths which you will go to for them.
If it is unreciprocated or unappreciated, it's time to move on.
NO BUTS, MOVE ON.
Clinging to a fantasy is childish and self destructive. Maladaptive emotional expressions are incredibly unhealthy and can cause to to become reviled and hated... quite the opposite of what you think you want.
Depends on who you're talking about. I'm pretty sure my daughter would do diddly squat for me (but I could be wrong) but I'm moving heaven and earth to make her life better.
I disagree. I crossed oceans for someone I thought cared about me, and all she did was emotionally abuse me and make me feel like shit. I haven't been as trusting and open ever since she left me.
