Yeah, american cars were not made for a 24 hours endurance races but for drag races and small circuits.

Remember, it's not about the size of the engine but how it works and how much it last before it needs a repair. Why would you want a 2000-3000cc V8 engine with 600+ hp if it's only gonna last a little

2000 cc V8? The smallest I can think of in an American car of the era was an Oldsmobile 260 which is approx 4260cc. Heck my truck now is 6700 cc.

Not to get in the way of a silly story, but of 55 entrants 2 were certified by National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. Neither of them had resources or even in one case extra tires. It was simply a show being put on by a promoter to get attention. Oh, and one finished 42. The next year Pontiac released the Le Mans edition.
