Sometimes treatable doesn't come close to meaning curable, it just gives you slightly more time -if that- but at a great cost physically, emotionally, and yes also financially. Each person has to decide what is best for them. It can be hard to understand from the outside though. While the OP may know the patient, they referred to him as a coworker, not friend, so they may not be privy to everything that went into that tough decision.

Great way of coping with reality: "Yea, it could well be not as bad as it obviously is."
hey daisy, lung cancer isn't curable at all, in most cases most you can do as a doctor is to take a paliative care approach and make the patient's dying easier. however. this man here is refusing treatment because it costs too much. being taken care of, whichever way, pain meds, paliative radiation etc, it costs too much. so he decided to spare the debt to his family and go out dying slowly and painfully like this was fucking 14th century.
he is not deciding to refuse certain types of treatment for /personal reasons/. lots of people with cancer do that and they can do as they please, it's their life, their choice etc. HOWEVER. this man's choice is either to a) recieve medical care and condemn his family to a life of paying off debts or b) die awfully.
do you understand? he's not choosing betwen treatment and no treatment. he's choosing between awful death and fucking his loved ones over... in the richest fucking country in the world. it'd be hilarious if it weren't so. fucking. sad.
Linds you're missing my point. Op doesn't know this patient well enough to make the statement they did- otherwise they wouldn't have used the term coworker. I understand quite well, I've lost a large number of loved ones to cancer, most recently both my parents. We didn't have a lot of money either but they still got treatment. And still died miserable deaths. Dying awfully wasn't due to America's healthcare system.
He should try crowdfunding. If a "transfinancial" girl can do it with the only reason being her thinking she should be richer, he should be able to do it too.

And, yet, if you want to get treated for cancer, the United States has the most technologically advanced centers in the world BECAUSE we encourage capitalism in medicine.
I do believe that universal health care is great for humanity. Unfortunately, most humans believe in what is best for themselves. By allowing these people to explore their talents through economic incentive, we actually gain medical knowledge and treatments.
Free healthcare is a bargain from what I've heard. You can get free healthcare - but you'll have to be in a 6 month waiting list. I can't claim to be a professional in this topic but everything I've read say this.

Cuba literally has a vaccine for cancer and they are not capitalist. And america is not the most advanced.
Cuba's "vaccine" only keeps people alive a little longer, if their claims are true.
As for your second claim, I'm curious to know who is the most advanced.
