For one, it is useful for mobile devices with infinite scrolling. Having the "read more" thing lets new users see the website footer without having to scroll down hundreds of times.

Yeah, fuck those sites. Theres literally Over 9000 other places to go to read it. Why do you so desperately want me to not read it at your site?

Amp too. Google, Chrome and Amp can go fuck itself. I do not need a hand holding buffer between me and the content I'm looking for.
