Them being bred as pit fighters also made them ideal for looking after children. A protective dog is good, a protective dog bred to take damage is even better.

I think you'll find that's Staffordshire Bull Terriers you're talking about, not pit bulls.
I think you will find they are pretty much the same thing. The pit bull classification covers several different breeds.

Had a staffie when I was younger/ pregnant with first. She never left my side and then when first was born she would sleep right next to his cot. She was so protective over him. I miss her
I can confirm I have a staffordshire terrier mixed with a rottweiler and he's very protective of all the kids on my street. He even stopped one kid from being taken at one point.
Do a Google search for "Nanny dog myth." Pit bulls were never known as nanny dogs. It's complete, total, invented bullshit. Most pit bull advocacy groups have stopped using "Nanny dog" in their propaganda.

Person: "I'm having a stroke!"
Pitbull owner: "they're such a gentle breed, so misunderstood"
That's not true in the slightest. 1. Because the myth was already debunked by pit bull rescues. And 2. Because the term applied to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the 1st place. It was never a term to describe the APBT.
And no. They are not the same breed. Saying a Staffy, a Pit and an Amstaff are the same same thing is like saying a Lab, a Golden Retriever and a Poodle are all the same because they are similar and may look alike.
They used to paint toys with lead paint. Nurseries were insulated with asbestos. Children were treated with opiates and turpentine. Generally, people learn how stupid and dangerous they are.
