Karma isn't about balancing the good with bad (or the other way around), it's about balancing the good/bad you do with the good/bad you receive, so if karma is in any way involved that means you were outstandingly good to receive all that, keep that up and you'll be karma-safe
In other words, if you make your gf angry you'll lose half the stuff you gained

Actually Karma is not really like that. All actions have consequences, good or bad ones. Karma is the sum of everything that keeps you tied in your existence, no matter if its caused by good or bad deeds. The more karma you "collect" in your life, the harder it will be to get rid of it and become enlightened. Bad deeds will let you reincarnate on lower stages with less chances to loose karma and move towards enlightenment. If you follow the buddhist way of looking at things, it's all entirely up to you, in hinduism you can try to let gods help you to get rid of karma. So you want to accumulate good karma in order not to be ie. a worm in the next life, but you want to avoid any karma at all to reach enlightenment or become a buddha.
My life has been the other way around. Lost my health for 6 months, lost my job because of it, lost my GF because of that, then lost my home. Life was pretty dire but things can only get better right?
