Long long time ago, not sure when but they thought that you would fall off if you had a boat and rode? It to the 'end of the earth'. They had no idea it was a sphere, just a flat piece of land.
I also want to point out because I have no life, that a lot of cell sites use satellites for backhaul, especially in rural areas where it may not be cost effective to build out a network for those purposes.
