Seriously. I wish more americans knew more about both what EXACTLY happened and the models that would actually fix it. Know what happened in the US? They just renamed the loophole. You can still bet on bets on bets on bets of toxic assets.... that's part of why the stock market has been steadily increasing again... but it's just another house of cards.
Everybody watch the Big Short. You bet we're going to have another economic recession soon because the government thinks the big banks can never fail and didn't learn their lesson the first time. We just renamed processes and loans and swaps that crashed out economy in the first place. History repeats itself
Iceland also encourages women pregnant with children with downs syndrome to abort, and thinks this is some 'great scientific achievement'.

Do they actually encourage it or do they simply show women what's in their belly and let them decide for themselves
I just thought of something: I don't think people with down syndrome are allowed to have children, and seeing as Iceland has a low enough population as is, they might want as many mentally and physically sound people to be able to reproduce as possible
@yagirl Honestly, weeding out genetic dysfunctions is a good idea to the health of a small population; especially one as debilitating as down's that can be detected SO early.
If you want to go all puritan, fine, but 20 years from now when genetic screening is the norm don't look around for help or sympathy when we tried to tell you.
Callous or cold, I don't care... We have DNA that is trying to perfect itself the same way the universe is trying to understand itself.
you, my friends, are cruel. a child is a child. kids with Down's syndrome ar blessing that show you how to be kind loving people. and @yimmye I don't think you understand what I meant.
I've seen how kids with Down's are treated. If there is any way to avert subjecting a person to that, I'll take it.
I would prefer genetic restructuring, but that's a different argument.
maybe instead of just... killing babies because of disabilities we should reform the way society treats them? save lives instead?

@yagirl you're right, I don't. Could you explain more about it, because I find it somewhat hard to believe a civilised country would practice eugenics

Okay, a quick google search shows that my suspicions were correct: Iceland requires doctors to tell expectant parents about the possibility of a test to check for things like down syndrome or other serious birth defects. Most people take the test, and almost all mothers DECIDE to abort their child if it has down syndrome. The people decide for themselves, the state only provides them with information.
You may ask why all people in Iceland choose to do this, I've already explained why I think they do this

Many families don't have the resources to care for special needs. Maybe the kid is better off?
