Dogs do the head tilt to figure out where a noise is coming from vertical.
We as humans can do that easily because out brain knows the difference when a sound bounced off the bottom if our ear as opposed to the top.
Dogs with the precious floppy flappers can't quite do the same thing. So they tilt their head, so the noise will hit one ear before the other.
So when your dog does the twisty boy, you now know it's because they heard something. And they're trying to figure out where it is.
