In California they banned plastic bag like these last year. Now they charge you 10 cents for each paper or thick plastic bag (think ten of these fused together) that won't hold much. Or you can always buy the store's reusable bags for a dollar or more, given the size you need. Because fuck you, welcome to California.
I never remember to bring my reusable bags and end up buying more at the check out. So what used to be one plastic bag stuffed with other plastic bags in my kitchen, is now a super large insulated reusable bag packed to the brim with bags I had to pay for.
So don't be surprised if you're shopping in Cali and see people taking all their groceries out to the car without any bags. This is a technique I have since adopted, we just bag them to bring them inside, because chances are we left our bags at home.
