Next to participation awards, sending kids into "time out" is part of the overall problem we see out there. The message of the first is "never mind, we don't expect anything from you anyway", killing any efforts and ambitions. But time out is even worse: it means "we don't want to deal with you, when you're annoying, your emotions don't count, and we don't want to solve problems, we just don't want to see them" so what these kids learn is to pretend everything is smooth and then !!really!! explode, or they turn into emotionless little robots full of self loathing and passive aggressiveness.

A better alternative to getting the crap beaten out of them. I'd take a time out over a beatig

Time outs are meant to make them settle down to allow for a proper conversation and rational thinking. Its to let them get out of being angry so they can listen to why they did something wrong. And a participation award is meant to encourage people to try again sometimes and that at least they tried. I remember feeling great when i got one because i had never gotten something for trying before. Rewarding effort can encourage. But overdone it can be bad.
