Either they are expected to go down with the plane or they simple turn on autopilot and go into the cabin before detaching.

Maybe they could do this only for flights when there's more of a chance of crashing

Most risks in flights have to do with the fuel tank being damaged, there is a way to prevent flight accidents by making the tank and related mechanisms more secure, but it raises prices of flights and that airlines don't want to discourage people from buying tickets.
