It's not just white people though.
When I lived in Chile, people would ask where I was from. I'd say Ohio, and they'd say, "I know a guy in Boston named such and such.You know the guy?"
Yeah that's also annoying. ..but at least it's 1 country. Africa is a continent. .not a country

I'd say it's 50% excusable for anyone over 60. Before 1960-70, there weren't near as many countries as there are now. Suddenly an area close in size to North America was split into 50+ independent territories with their own local governments, some large and some small, bearing a striking resemblance to USA's 50 states.
It's still wrong, to be sure, but understandable for the elderly.

So I looked it up last night, and in 1950, there were only like 10 countries in Africa. Even then, they were areas under European control. So Ghana and Guinea were both part of French West Africa.
