They kind of were quite illegal. People who had a specific knowledge about drugs were either monks or regarded as witches. Otoh Claviceps purpurea was often present in grain flour and caused hallucinogenic mass trips on a regular base, where a whole village would see very strange things for as long as that flour lasted. This fungus contains ergotamine which is the (original) base substance for - tadah - LSD. So whatb they experinced was acid trips (plus some severe physical side effects). But also drinks like wine and beer (hardly anyone drank water, because it was mostly poisonous) were often spiked with drugs based on Solanaceae plants, also said to be quite trippy, adding strongly to the effect of those drinks. Quite popular with some people, but quite dangerous as well, if overdosed. This lead - at least partly - to the beer purity laws in germany (Reinheitsgebot) in the early 16th century, so brewers could only use water, barley and hops.
