I HATE how these people are treated like the plague, like they're lesser beings. They are perfectly capable of holding jobs, starting families, and leading wonderful lives. That's more than a lot of people without down syndrome can say!
I do not want to be rude or disrespective, but the big issue with down syndrome is that those people require a lot of time and effort of people to take care of them. (Just fyi, I've worked with these people for years and agree that they should not be treated as lesser beings, but I've also seen the other side of it. If you'd give birth to a child with down syndrome, you are immidiately responsible for it for their entire lives as they won't ever be able to be truly independent. I understand why people would terminate pregnancy and I get why they are so little in Iceland. But yes, due to their numbers being so low, I understand why people would have more issues meeting someone with down syndrome. People don't like what they are not familiar with, for better or worse.
If that sweet guy had been conceived in Iceland, he would have been "terminated" in the womb, and all us pro-choice people need to be OK with that. Selective termination based on unwanted characteristics--like disability or potential to develop a disability, gender, etc.--all that comes under "choice" if, as we all agree, it's the woman's body and nobody else has a say.
Think this all the way through and make sure tha you're still pro-choice for when some pro-life person tries to confuse the issue.
I suppose it's possible. I see the issue as the contrast between the two posts:
1. We've eradicated Downs Syndrome by terminating fetuses who are shown to have it, and
2. People with Downs Syndrome can be loving and loved, and shouldn't be thought of as defective and therefore terminated in the womb.
I see that if you are pro choice, you have to be ok with #1.
What do YOU think the issue is that I've confused?
State sponsored eugenics is not choice. But some rabid pro choicers want “choice” until the moment of birth anyway. Other rabid pro choicers use the child as leverage over the father. My friend’s ex fiancé aborted after a petty argument with him as punishment for disagreeing with her and then waited weeks to tell him the deed was done and what the sex had been, she didn’t care at all and was confused when he ended the engagement. They had already chosen two names, had a wedding venue booked etc. After he broke it off and he moved out of town. This is the face of unfettered pro choice.
Usually when they find out when they’re not far along. The main problem is that the rarity of downs in the society means that it’s more stigmatised and people don’t know as much about it.
