They do it so as to save battery life. The older models were crashing due to them not being able to handle the current needs for the phone due to the ageing of the batteries which makes perfect sense and has evidence to back it up. More processes means more energy needed which means more heat. Too many processing at once can cause it to overheat due to the deterioration of the battery causing the phones to shutdown. Apple made a limit on the amount of processes permitted so that it wouldn't overheat and shut down.
I don't even like Apple products. I'm more than happy to stay with my Android.
It should still at least be made an option by the user though, or they could block updates the phones can't handle instead of slowing them down completely
Technology is advancing more quickly than most people realize and batteries are stale. The amount of processing power is quickly increasing while batteries haven't changed much in the last few years. We just don't have the technology yet at all.
Then what makes other phones different? As far as anyone can tell, Apple is the only phone brand struggling with their aging batteries.

I find it interesting that people fight over these things so much... I have an android phone that I use for phone uses, texting, and internet. And I have an ipod touch that I use for music and game apps, because the storage is better.
Seriously, why do people have to be so exclusive about things?
Because not everyone can afford to get a different device for different tasks.

My ipod touch was purchased while I was in college working a minimum wage job. I bought it second-hand, and it's an older model, a 5, actually. Still have my nano too. It was also bought when I had a flip phone, not a smart phone. I got a smart phone two years later. You can do both if you're thrifty and plan for it, and if you take care of your stuff. I've had that ipod for 5 years now, going on 6.

No matter how rich I get, I will never buy an Apple anything. Android all the way.
I have never had a problem with battery life, and all my touchscreen smartphones have been Samsungs that I've kept two-three years. I only changed because I like change, but they still work.
