Is her dad Sherlock Holmes or something?

Nope. He dad was alerted because he was going to wipe off the windshield and the van was parked so close he couldn't even get in the driver's door. Instead of approaching he had the intelligence to back away and observe. Many dads would have just pounded on the van and demanded they move over or away. But this guy thought it through.

If I saw a guy in a van sitting that close to my car at night I wouldn’t get in. The father probably just noticed how sketch it is if it was in a quiet area of town

But why would he even suspect that? I see vans parked besides car everywhere with people sitting in them. It has never crossed my mind that a kidnapper would do that.

Well. It is konda creepy when the sliding door towards the middle, is right next to the driver's door. Also sketch when the driver is still in the van, and keeps eyeballing the car and the bar exit. Always observe your surroundings.

Dads have a certain instinct. Which is why I'll never be one.

It's not instinct, it's the fact that dads feel physically responsible for their wives and children, so they are constantly on alert when out in the world with either. This dad was better at it than most dads maybe, but dads approach every car (or van) or room or street corner with a cynical eye.

An innate, natural feeling of enhanced alertness? If only there was a word for this...
