me: "did you push the chairs in?"
newguy: "no, why do i have to do it?"

What if the chairs get confused and one chair goes into another chairs spot, and they have a chair fight. Or even worse, one chair learns how to make a clapping sound so now he can control his brethren.

i think every chair have a specific "home location" where he goes when he hears a clapping sound. i don't think that they are "intelligent" and can find free spots & then go there.. this would be to complex for this scenario. but hey.. there are even shoes etc. who can do the same in i think asia (i would need to reread where it was if you want to know)
That's really cool and makes a lot of sense. Do you know if the chairs would respond to other sounds that are similar to claps? cause I can imagine that would be a problem unless the chairs can also sense when someone is sitting on them

i don't know if the chairs react to other sounds, but i think that they just do that to clapping sounds. most systems can decide really good if a sound is a clap or another sound, so this should not be hard to do. there are too lights who respond to clapping, so to do this this is not really new technology. i too think they don't move when they are at their home location & people are sitting on them. maybe they even rcognize the weight if someone is sitting on them & then just don't move - even if someone claps :)
