Some cats have serious superiority complexes. My dumbass 5lb Siamese routinely goes after my 70+lv pitbull, either taughting ir actually attacking her. He is damned lucky my dog is scared of cats (can't imagine why) and hides rather than defends herself.
Cats are faster, quicker, usually smarter, and are pure predators with retractable claws. Most dogs, hell, most wolves are scared of cats. It's like... why are some people afraid of spiders? Or crickets? Or bees?
Coyotes routinely kill cats, I cannot imagine why a wolf which is an apex predator would be afraid of a house cat. Sure, speed is handy but they are more than 10 times the size and strength. That is just ridiculous. Now if you are referring to big cats, such as a lynx or puma, definitely, but no way a house cat.
The fear of a puma can easily manifest in a house cat. It's not rational, obviously, but it happens. I said most, not all, even some coyotes won't mess with house cats... especially if they already have easier food sources.
