Yeah it’s weird that this is the first place people go. Like why not just say “in an emergency situation here’s how to access the emergency feature”.

It's a combination of things. Ask yourself: "who and what would this feature be good for?" On an iPhone- you can press home>emergency>9>1>1>call in 6 steps. This requires 5 taps of home and a swipe- 6 steps. It gives a location but no information to emergency services on what response to use. In a common mugging or robbery it's pointless. May as well give up your stuff and the robbers will likely be gone before police can respond. You need slightly less muscle memory than you would to dial but still some to use this. Dialing 911 and leaving the phone on allows them to hear what's going on and may capture evidence for trial or investigation such as voices or incriminating statements. The only crimes this is really useful for are ones where you fear for your life, are restrained, and know you'll be there awhile. Domestic violence, rape, and dumb hostage takers are big ones. The first two are most common, and women are the most reported victims of those, so this is letting women know.

It's not always true anyway. What you should really do is actually CALL 911, or your country's equivalent. Pretend you're ordering food, or if you can't talk, just leave the call going in the background. Those things will send up red flags for dispatchers. Butt dials are different, and they will sound different.

Tested it on my iphone7, just wanted to see if the swipe came up. Doesn't work.
