I think it's largely a proof of concept experiment. If he can safely land a car with a simulated astronaut in the seat, let alone an entire spaceship, that's a successful mission.
The car has been put in orbit beyond Mars and is going to be orbiting the sun undisturbed for a million+ years. It was more like landing the rocket boosters and then seeing just how much power they could get out of the 3rd stage (they got more than expected, hence why the orbit is closer to the asteroid belt than Mars).
