My issue is with the logs falling down. They could snuff out the fire. Especially if it’s running a bit weak.

I feel as though the suffix in your name is an improper fit.

question: for which purpose someone should let a fire run this long without be near the fire? normaly if you are in a survival situation, you don't let a fire burn if you are not there.. it could spread and create a big wood fire. if you are not near the fire, normaly you put it out / let it run out by itself (if you are near the fire and watch over it). + normaly you would build a stone wall in a circle on the outer part of the fire so the fire don't spread. the dirt under the fire too get really hot so if you let it run this long this could get you in trouble if the dirt get too hot & then the fire is spreading without you seeing it (roots who begin to glow under the dirt because of the heat). as someone who do survival stuff as a hobby i can tell you that this construction is not really a good idea :/ could you really get in trouble (animals & the forest itself too).

my question is, wouldn't it just burn up the logs?

no. the heat would heat up the dirt under and around the fire. then this heat would make roots inside the dirt glow. from this on the roots who glow would be able to set the plants or even trees on fire (it would take maybe hours or days, but its possible) they belong to. because this reason, you mix water and dirt to put it under your fire so the heat will just vaporize the water and don't set stuff on fire. some people already had set whole woods on fire because they did such stuff.

p. s: trees are often connected by their roots under the earth. it's like a big spiderweb who connects 100's of trees and plants. that's the reason why it would spread the fire under this circumstances a lot.
