People are different as has been pointed out. In general though things aren't so binary as "direct" or "friends." The point is in keeping some level of sexual/romantic tension and interest. For most people if a sibling or parent suddenly tried to be romantic or sexual they'd be shocked and upset. You've established a relationship and you are suddenly changing the terms and adding a new component. If you can maintain and foster those elements you can hang out without direct pressure and get to know the person. The type of friends that generally become lovers have a different dynamic than just any other friend. Knowing what you need to do to keep them interested and keep the door open through playful flirting, a little mystery, or whatever that person requires to think of you as someone they could be with vs someone they like hanging out with.

At my job I always talk to the customers (it's a chill gig) so for most of my shift I'm just talking to people. When this dude in particular gave me a bad vibe I kept inserting into stories that I'd tell him "my boyfriend and I" so he knew I was seeing someone. This guy made a move on me last night like come on I told you I have a boyfriend so don't try this crap. Worst part is I still have to see him at my job as he is a regular customer. If you know someone has a partner, don't try to pick them up. You are the worst.
