I'm skeptic here. I don't want to call or stranger a liar, or imply they weren't skilled or integrated enough to see the impact. This is their perspective though so may not be a full picture. It may well depend on the title/studio. For instance a game that is extremely large might not see a huge impact to profits, and a small indie game that becomes a hit may not, but those in between May. I once had to do upgrades that brought down a large companies sales portal for 15 minutes in the middle of the night on the last business day of the year. I got a last minute call from their CIO saying no. Turns out they were just short of year end sales. Thought it was stupid and that little time wouldn't make a difference but begrudgingly held off. They just barely made it, 1000+ people wouldn't have got their bonus for the year if I'd done it. The business impact would have been nothing but to those people it would have made a big dent in their pay. Sometimes we just don't see the effects.
There have been studies funded by movie studios and video game studios that have actually proven it doesn't hurt sales
The reason it's not common knowledge is because they don't want people to know that ( kind of like how McDonald's tried to make their coffee lawsuit sound like a dumb woman suing cause coffee was a bit too hot when she actually got third degree burns and skin graphs had to be done)
