It would be interesting to see the minimum wage be set to a livable wage and see what happens to the economy. I say let's test it in the States - y'all already got a dystopia going on over there, might as well throw this onto you and watch the outcome.

It would get rid of the weird tipping thing they’ve got going on to start with

Waitresses would have their income drcreased dramatically if we put them at minimum wage without tips. They would much rather keep it like it is, I'm sure.

Actually that's the point of minimum wage... it's the minimum amount of money you can live on. That's why it's the minimum, if you can't live off of it (and I'm not including luxuries, just the essentials) then it's not the minimum, you're living off below the minimum wage.

Minimum wage is meant for one individual to be able to support themselves and live in ways that most people don't think of as an option. It's not there to support comfortable AC/heat in Summer/Winter just not heat stroke/freezing. It's not there to support your "need" for pets. It's not there to support TV/internet/cellphone/cable/new cars/more than basic clothing, possibly shared renting of an apartment, public transportation to that job, basic food. It's there to make sure you can survive, not to make sure you can be happy. Social programs keep extending what is "necessary" and many people think they have to have things that they really don't.

I've never worked in fast food but I have worked retail before and let me just say that they're definitely underpaid considering the bullshit they have to deal with on a daily basis. If anything, I think working retail should be a requirement for everyone. Make it a class in high school. It certainly taught me to have greater respect for retail workers.
