NYC commited to and successfully planted 1 million trees ahead of schedule as of November 2016. Their 2 year mortality rate for urban street trees is very low for a large city, about 2% lower than LA, 1% lower than Oakland, and still lower than even Denver. I suspect the outrage stems from the fact that New York imposes a penalty up to $15,000 for cutting down public trees or removing trees on private property without permit. What this sign doesn’t mention clearly is wether there was perhaps a town hall or similar open planning netting held as is common for community service departments. At these meetings they give news and allow objections, input, and often vetos from the public. If such a meeting wasnt held then while transpearancy wasn’t beat served one does have to wonder if they acted illegally, or if it falls within the jurisdiction of the parks department to make such decisions where parks are concerned.

They do that so often where I live, recently they cut down around 4,100 year old fig trees to put in something that the community voted NO against. It frustrates me to no end.
