A lovely country, but not the utopia most make it out as. Asides the well known facilitation of illegal financial activity and lack of cooperation with global authorities in combating crime; there’s: women not gaining national voting rights until 1991, children being taken from their family’s to provide a multimillion dollar free labor force (official apology in 2013,) Switzerland is one of the worlds most prolific arms exporters and makes a good deal of money sellin assault weapons and ammunition in global conflict zones. Resident aliens can be deported for a single “major” crime and recent push by powerful political patlrties has been to expel non citizens for 2 minor offenses (such as traffic crime) within a 10 year period. Tax and financial crimes are excluded, and if you an afford a fee you can avoid the punishment. Sexism and ageism are fairly common and accepted at work, and a deep xenophobia and prejudice to outsiders and that which is different.... cont....
There more to be said as well as a compete debunking of the idea of a “socialist success story,” but I’ll leave it at that. I’m not trying to insult the country or it’s people- no where on earth is perfect and that is my point. The fact that you can leave your groceries out overnight doesn’t make a utopia. It’s nice, but it comes at a price.
...by "right there" I meant on this picture... I'm aware I don't know enough about the country to judge its whole :)
(btw thks for your comment because it's really interesting, I'll look more into it when I get the time-kinda supposed to work for my finals rn)
Good luck with finals. Please don’t think I was impugning or reprimanding you in any way. Switzerland and much of the Netherlands just are commonly held up as bastions of leftist socialism utopia- the welfare systems many are currently phasing out or reforming are touted often held up as proof of how backwards the rest of the western world is. I think many are noble ideas, but popular culture and media tend to focus on all the positives of the system while leaving out the negatives so it isn’t anyone’s fault for thinking a place we’ve been told is all acceptance, chocolate, and free money is paradise. I just wanted to take the chance to bring up that perfection isn’t so simple sadly.
Don't worry I didn't take it the wrong way at all, besides, it's cool to learn about something I would probably not have spontaneously investigated but that I'm now a bit curious about. And thanks for the luck (I might need it).
