I could be wrong, but it looks like there's a fence on the other side of the track. So really, what he did was the best option.

What did you want him to do? Jump in as well? Try to grab the baby troller at the same time? That would not have been a smart move. Now, if someone was indeed dead he would have felt awkward as fuck but here I don't see the problem.
