A bit of stupidity never killed an entire species.

What are you talking about grim? The dodo man. Stupidity killed that entire species. They'd hear a dodo get caught and all charge back to try to save it and get caught too.

They weren't stupid. They had no predators so they didn't know how to react. I guess you're stupid for not knowing what to do when things that you've never seen before show up at your doorstep.

They had the correct instinct to run away. They'd scatter. Then one or two would get caught and scream and the others would all turn tail and charge to save their friend. There are first hand reports by the dudes that caught them about how they would do this. That's a level of pack loyalty veiled in unintelligent animal bravado.

They weren't dumb, just unprepared for humans.

They were prepared for humans with their scatter instincts. Just like with turkeys. Where the stupidity lies is in their break from that instinct in defense of a doomed pack member. Many Canids that are in threatless positions in an eco system will abandon doomed pack members in the face of a new threat that's either unknown, in which case they may stick around at long range, or obviously overpowering (humans), in which case they just bolt and don't come back for a time. The dodo breaking instinct for a rescue attempt is a sign of faulty survival instincts, faulty logical processes, and faulty learning capacity. I.E. stupidity.

Where are you getting this from? I'm actually pretty curious.

Many years of getting bored at 2 in the morning, reading something, not believing it, and having to research it. The dodo stuff is a lot from the first hand reports of their behavior I mentioned. Other stuff is from random documentation of animal behavior I've read over the years. The not yet wanting to sleep brain is very willing to read papers, essays, and research notes on the most random shit sometimes especially when I've homework for an important major requirement class.

I know too much random ass shit man. My usual go to random fact is that chinchillas have multiple times the hair per follicle than humans to the point that ticks, fleas, and the like suffocate but they can't get wet without growing mold so they take dust baths.
