there is a difference :P sugar is triggering specific stuff in your brain, it's makin you happy. like.. a drug does. but yes, other stuff does it too.
p.s: just try to don't eat sugar at all for like 1-2 weeks and then eat sugar.. you see what i mean ^^ we eat that much sugar without even knowing it that we don't really feel the effect strong enough anymore to see how strong it is in his effects. every food you can find, even water have often sugar mixed in it.. so you can't really prevent to don't eat sugar anymore. it's like if you smoke too much weed.. after a while you don't feel it anymore if you stay at the same dose.
