I've only clapped once when a plane has landed. It was insanely foggy to the point that you could barely see the lights at the side of the runway. It took skill to land the plane in fog that thick.
I didn't know this was a thing people didn't like. I mean screaming children and seat kickers are.one thing. Feet on the arm rest is another. But I never thought of plane clapping as bizarre or annoying.
Well, I suppose it has to do with the idea that traveling by airplane is more dangerous, and that landing it thus takes more skill. Of course airplane travel is very safe in modern times, but in the past it must have been different.
