That too. Tbh I think the anime is actually what made me like charmander better than the other starters. Not that a fire breathing dragon-that-isn't-a-dragon wasn't cool, but after the dying in the rain episode, and then all the stuff leading up to Charizard, and then the one where Charizard was frozen in a block of ice or something and Ash had to work to keep its tail from going out. I don't remember a lot about the anime, but my child-self was emotionally invested in that freaking storyline.

Maybe that's why he doesn't age. He actually died and all the Pokemon tears actually bright him back as a Pokemon himself.
