That's pretty common knowledge at this point, but it doesn't change the fact that they weren't gripping the gator's jaw, and this was insanely irresponsible.
The gator could have been hurt, which could be detrimental to it's survival. The gator could have hurt THEM. It could have grabbed their foot. Or them moving the way they did could have imbalanced them on the boat, causing them to fall into the water. Advantage gator. The gator's teeth could have caused lacerations, or come off in the skin altogether. Even if the person got away, dirty water and open wounds usually don't do well together.
Any of this would likely would have resulted in the gator being hunted down and killed for being "aggressive." The hurt person would them require medical attention, which would take time and resources away from other people needing medical attention.
There's literally a dozen reasons why there was no good reason for them to do this
