I don't actually really want someone to risk their life for my pets. If they choose to, fine, but I probably wouldn't even mention my pets to a first responder unless they specifically asked.
You can't expect them to be able to save them, but if you don't at least mention the animals, then I don't really see why you'd have them at all.
The first responders are capable of assessing the risk factor in more scenarios, I would think. As guest pointed out, if they don't think it's plausible, they won't try and save the animals. But without mentioning it at all, you're taking away any chance that it MIGHT be safe enough for them to do something.
And likely condemning an animal you swore to care for to death without even that small effort to change that outcome
Mentioning it hurts no one at all
I don't want to put a human in a position where he's risking his life for an animal, it as simple as that.
"I don't really see why you'd have them at all."
Because I enjoy having pets. My unwillingness to put a human at risk to rescue them doesn't affect that.
"an animal you swore to care for to death"
I don't' know where you get your pets, but I didn't have to take any oath where I got mine.
Okay, I'll try and put it in a simpler manner: I don't know why you'd purchase an animal, put it in a situation where its existence and survival are entirely dependent on you, and then say you didn't make any claims that you were going to take care of it. Again, the humans are more than capable of assessing the risk. If you're not willing to admit that you have an obligation to care for something you purchased knowing it would be dependant on you, and you're not willing to at least give your animals as much of a chance as a few simple words can offer, you definitely shouldn't own them
"say you didn't make any claims that you were going to take care of it."
Who would I have claimed this to?
"the humans are more than capable of assessing the risk."
If there is risk, I don't want to obligate someone to take it for the sake of an animal.
"you have an obligation to care for something you purchased"
An obligation to who? The pet?
"you definitely shouldn't own them"
We obviously differ in opinion on this.
I think guest was trying to say you would be advertising that you had unregistered pets, which can get you into trouble if you live in a place that requires pets to be registered.
I don't think guest was trying to say those pets should die, just that you don't want to broadcast the fact that you have unregistered pets.
I think it's better to broadcast having unregistered pets, rather than to have unregistered pets, tell no one, so when a disaster DOES hit, the animals get left to die. I'm pretty sure most average people won't see a sticker like this and go "I wonder if their registrations are up to date.... Better make a few calls."
