Sometimes you should apologize. I'm sorry for being late implies you didn't want to be late but we're because of some unavoidable circumstances, and/ or are willing to learn from your mistake and not repeat it again

Strictly speaking, “replacing” “I’m sorry” with “thank you” could likely result in this gem: “Thank you for sleeping with your sister.”
